The other day I received a package from Nøgne Ø with some of their latest beers, and I’ll try to review my way through them this week (alongside the Belgian beers I got from belgianbeerz.com).
First up is a collaboration with Emelisse, and the style is a Grodziskie, which is probably not too common in Norway, at least yet. This is actually the first review of this style on this blog.
Slightly hazy golden yellow color with a huge white head.
Aroma
I’m getting salty smoked meat, like sausages for instance, and a dash of lemon. The smokiness is quite intense, and takes up a bit too much of the aroma.
Flavor
The flavor is much more balanced, and is quite interesting with the blend of the tartness from the lemon-like flavors, and the smoky meat-like flavors. Not exactly your average beer…
The carbonation is quite soft actually. I was expecting more with regards to the head, but it fits the beer perfectly.
Finish
Rather short finish with hints of lemon up front and a tiny amount of smoke towards the end.
Rating
A very interesting beer, and a very interesting style. For me this beer was spoilt by the aroma. The flavor was nicely balanced, but the smokiness in the aroma was too overpowering. Anyways a really interesting beer / style, so check it out if you get the chance.
Disclamer: I received this bottle from Nøgne Ø.
